Antarctica is actually owned by a number of different countries and therefore can not really be considered an individual entity except as a continent.
Ron Klatt

The claims on Antarctica are not recognized by most nations, therefore it is not "OWNED" by anyone but the rest of mac's statement is very accurate. It is not a country, it is however the fifth largest continent. Unfortunatley people he is right about Canada as a land mass (Edmonton, AB here). It is only 9,093,507 KM2 land with 891,163 Km2 fresh water (lakes and rivers) which equals O.J's magic 9.9M Km2 or 9,984,640 Km2 to be accurate.

Canada is the 2nd largest nation in the world when based on volume and area. Canada also has the most fresh water than any one nation as well. About 9% of the world's fresh water supply. If you are only counting area that isn't covered by water than you have to exclude Antarctica totally since 99.9% of its surface is covered in water. Ice and snow are water.

Lakes and rivers are part of a country's territory and are always included in the total land area. Canada's land area is: 9,976,139 km2.

I followed many of these stats with interest, I even thought they were official until I clicked on to the "largest" page. Now, I know we eat a lot of junk food and are becoming larger but the USA is not yet larger than the second largest nation in in the world; "Canada" Do the research! Look at some official data like an encyclopedia.

jimbo, 140,000 species is nothing, not when it covers every type of organism. Canada has 193 mammals - Ecuador, at a fiftieth of its size, has 320. According to your source, Canada has 420 species of birds, Ecuador has over 2000. How about insects (which after all are about half the named species). Huge Canada, around 30,000, tiny Ecuador, over one million.

It's amazing that a country's general information page doesn't contain its land area. That's one of the most important things there are to know about a country. Finding a country's land area proved very difficult.

Despite where this thread may go, size doesn't matter, so who cares if Canada is bigger than America or not. Let it go.

Canada as far as I remember has always been #2 Russia (formally USSR) Canada and then China. This is what for many years we were taught in school.

Canada is no 2 in *total* area, which includes much of the water sorrounding the islands north of it, and the great lakes. furthermore, the US has a lot of water in the great lakes and lakes around the country. that's why US and Canada are lower on the list than usual

For Dino. You say that the United States has more room for population growth, this is correct in terms of livable space, but the fact that Canada has roughly 34 million people we have more space to grow as oppossed to the United States, with over 230 million peoples. And if the States shouldn't have enough water for electrical or living needs, just buy it off Canada....

Canada is #2. Playing over lakes and waterways is idiotic. Do you count the mountain slopes and elevation changes into the land mass numbers? Russia, Canada, China, US,....

Your website has some large mistakes in it, you should consider revising it. Canada definitely has a larger land mass than china and the united states.

Canada is the second largest country in the world. Simply no way around it. Ask anyone with a grade 4 education should be able to point that out by just looking at a simple map. However most Americans think Canada is nothing more than a small spec on the world since their "Huge Texan Hold 'Em" States are all they really know. It's a shame since we are side by side.

Even if you just count land area (not water), the other three sources I googled still put Canada second.

Wow. What retards. Yea, America is definately bigger than Canada. Learn English, (not American) and learn that you are SMALLER than Canada. Not larger. Look at any reputable source besides your own shoddy website.

Would you people please read the title of the list before posting that it is wrong. Canada is the second largest in TERRITORY, not actual land. Land is the rocks and unconsolidated materials not covered by water. Please look at an atlas or globe to see how much water there is in Canada. It has most of the world's lakes and is made up of many islands.

Also, Antarctica has land under the ice and snow, the same as Alaska and Canada have land under their glaciers. The argument can also be made that, because ice meets the definition of a mineral, it should be counted as land, not water.

Yes Sudan is bigger than Algeria therefore it should be on top of Algeria. Your statistics are very good apart from minor errors.
