DEFINITION: Total recorded intentional homicides committed with a firearm. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence. Per capita figures expressed per 1,000 population.

How can it be that the number of murder using firearms is higher in Souith Africa (0.719782 per 1,000) than is the number of total murders (0.496008 per 1,000)?

Which number to trust? or non of the above?

Something is wrong with the stats for murder in south africa, the per capital killed with firearms is 0.79 per 1000 yet the murder overall per capita is only 0.49 ??

Why, according to your stats, is the number of people murdered in South Africa by firearms more than the total number of people murdered. A more accurate figure for the total number of people murdered in South Africa according to figures released by the SA government would be about 0.83 per 1000 and not 0.49 as you have on your web site. Sadly, this would put us at the top of the murder list also. We trust that things will change soon and that our stats will improve.

Perhaps the stat indicates .49 for murder per capita for the total population, and the firearm statistic, .79, uses the total murders for its denominator?

You must also take in consideration that these stats are from 1998 to 2000. They are not up to date.

In the per capita numbers that you state for murders with fire arms, it is very misleading. It leads people to believe that it is 27 people per 1000 murdered instead of .027% of 1000 people who are murdered by guns every year. Very misleading.

Ok, I know these comments are old, but... Total population of all countries listed / total murders in all countries listed = overall per capita murder rate. Total South African population / murders in South Africa = South African murder rate. They should have said average murder rate per capita instead of total. It makes a helluva lot of difference. But, on the other hand, just the mention of the word "total" should indicate a mean descriptor of a function, because you cannot take a total account without combining the data and extrapolating it such that the result is not a median value.
