How comes Brazil is not included in this list ? Brazil had the most reported gun deaths including the most reported gun murders and the most reported shootings in 2005 and yet Brazil is no where to be mentioned anywhere in this list.
In 2005 Brazil had a total of 38,000 gun deaths with 34,000 of those gun deaths being murders.
Nationmasters statistics are a load of rubbish and nothing but out of date and seriously flawed statistics get published on here. |

I don't know why people even bother publishing South African crime statistics.
It is well known that they are all incorrect- usually gross underestimates. |

Nostril Damus - On the contrary, it's normally disgruntled South African ex-pats and racist websites that are intentionally distorting and inflating murder statistics from various, credible sources. There were 12,011 gun murders in South Africa for the particular year we're talking about (1999). That's a firearm homicide rate of around 0.27 per 1,000 which is the true figure.
I could be wrong but the 31,918 looks suspiciously like a 'Medical Research Council of South Africa' sample from some of the countries main morgues - of which only a small portion were homicides. |

Utter nonsense Peter and for all I know you could be pretending. Believe me, I've come across a few on the internet claiming to know the real stats and bashing the ANC at every opportunity.
If you look at how many crimes overall (rape, assaults, drug-related offences, car thefts etc.) are reported in South Africa [which seems to have a very high rate of 'reporting' comparatively] compared to say, Colombia, there's only one country where murder is likely to be underreported and it's the South American nation. |

These are statistics for gun homicides that are considered 'accurate' by the scientific crime researching community. All are from the year 2000 which is the same year I believe as Nationmaster's data (all include 'lawful' homicides apparently).
Totals:
1. Brazil 34,755
2. Colombia 21,898
3. United States 11,071
4. South Africa 10,854
5. Venezuela 5,408
Per capita:
1. Colombia 0.5176917
2. South Africa 0.2482859
3. Venezuela 0.2224682
4. Brazil 0.2046829
5. United States 0.03933951

This has got to be wrong surely. The United Kingdom has more firearm murders than places like portugal, germany, switzerland etc. They should do a murder by knifes section, i bet the uk would be top. |
